Dhamma Teachings
Sharing the introduction of Dāna written by Bhikkhu Bodhi — a book about generosity and the meaning of giving.
#Activities of the temple
1. Dana (The practice of giving)
Merit from giving depends on three factors:
-
Quality of the donor’s intention.
-
Purity of the recipient.
-
Kind and size of the gift.#Activities of the Temple
2. The factor of volition
-
Intention (volition) is the most important part of giving.
-
Giving with wisdom brings the highest merit.
-
Respectful, mindful giving creates good results.
-
Giving with wrong motives (fear, pressure, regret) has weak merit.
The recipient of gifts
-
The purer the recipient, the greater the merit.
Giving to noble ones (ariyas) like the Buddha or Arahats produces the strongest kammic results. -
Intention is crucial.
A sincere, selfless intention can make even a small gift yield great merit, across many lifetimes. -
Giving benefits the giver regardless of the receiver.
Even if the recipient is immoral, pure intention still generates merit and strengthens renunciation.
The object to be given
The value of giving is determined by intention, sacrifice, and its support of the Dhamma — and the highest gift is sharing the Buddha’s teachings (Dhamma-dāna), which brings the greatest merit.
Happiness is not pleasure
What's Nivaranadhamma? What's Nivaranadhamma? It's the five hindrances existing in the mind that prevent ... Nivarana Dhamma, or pañca nīvaraṇa (the five hindrances), refers to five core mental obstacles in Buddhism that obstruct meditation, weaken wisdom, and prevent the mind from reaching calmness and enlightenment. They act as barriers, covering the mind and obstructing clarity, making it difficult to develop.
